Description

JUST ANNOUNCED: Roger Cohen, Policy Director of PennDOT will give an update on PennDOT's new policies regarding Driverless and Autonomous Vehicles.  1 PDH and 1 CLE credit (pending) are available for attendees.

Current technological capabilities for autonomous vehicles are expanding rapidly.  With UBER just launching its first trial of autonomous vehicles in Pittsburgh, USDOT announcing its Federal Automated Vehicles Policy and the President officially backing the use of these vehicles, it is clear the future of transportation is now.  But are we prepared for this new technology on roads?

Join us on December 2nd, for a lecture on Autonomous Vehicles at our Fall Luncheon featuring Dr. Alain Kornhauser, Princeton University Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering.  Dr. Kornhauser has been researching transportation and autonomous vehicle engineering for over 45 years at the University of Princeton.  He will address new policies for autonomous vehicles, how it will affect the future of transportation planning and infrastructure and why it is imperative that our planners and engineers become actively engaged in the dialogue and partnerships that will propel this new form of transportation forward.

About our Speakers

Dr. Alain Kornhauser, Princeton University
Currently, Dr. Kornhauser is the Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University, where he is also Director of the Interdepartmental Transportation Research Program, Co-Director of the Center for Transportation Information and Decision Engineering and an affiliated faculty member of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.  His recent research includes the application of large-scale network models, stochastic optimization techniques, and computer graphics to transportation problems. He is also studying fundamental aspects of human information processing, which he is applying to the design of neural networks, expert systems, robotics and automated highway systems.

Dr. Kornhauser has also led the development of the CoPilot suite of portable in-vehicle navigation systems for consumers and business professionals. Recognized by numerous awards, CoPilot is setting the world standard for real-time, GPS based, turn-by-turn directions. CoPilot products that route door-to-door and dock-to-dock throughout the United States, Western Europe, and Australia are widely available for Pocket PC, Notebook and Tablet PC hardware platforms.

Roger Cohen, PennDOT
Roger Cohen has been PennDOT Policy Director since July, 2015. As Policy Director, Roger advises Transportation Secretary Leslie S. Richards on all matters affecting transportation policy within the Department and the Commonwealth.  He is directly responsible for serving as the Department's liaison with the Governor's Office and other Commonwealth agencies on policy and regulatory matters.  He serves as co-chair of the Pennsylvania Autonomous Vehicle Policy Taskforce. His other principal areas of policy focus have been improving pedestrian safety and reducing the climate impacts of the transportation system. Before joining PennDOT, Roger had a diverse career in public service, law, politics, consulting and journalism. For eight years, he was at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, where he served as policy adviser to the agency's Executive Director and Board Chairman, manager of the agency-wide business planning process, and deputy director of the Port Authority's office of policy analysis and planning. He was a public affairs and issue management consultant for nine years, as well as worldwide director of communications and media relations at the global law firm White & Case, LLP.  Previously he served as the state and district director for a member of the US House of Representatives, and before that was an award winning reporter at the Bergen Record newspaper in New Jersey.  A graduate of Columbia University, Roger lives in Lancaster with his wife, Patricia O'Hara, a professor of English literature at Franklin & Marshall College.
